Tailings dams are at constant risk of failure, and our ability to simulate those failures is crucial in arming planners and emergency responders with data needed to save lives. In Part 1 of this 2-part webinar, our expert presenters demonstrate best practices for reflecting the hydraulic characteristics of non-Newtonian flow in 1D, 2D, and 3D models. We address how recent advances in hardware and software allow more accurate prediction of failure mechanisms and inundation zones. We also present a case study of the tragic Brumadinho Dam failure, comparing the results of five different modelling software applications that have been calibrated against observations of the event.
