Which countries have built the world’s largest renewable power systems? This video ranks 50 countries by their total installed renewable power capacity at the end of 2025, measured in gigawatts (GW). Source: International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Publication: Renewable Capacity Statistics 2026 Indicator: Total renewable energy capacity Reference date: End of 2025 Unit: Gigawatts (GW) Renewable power capacity represents the maximum net generating capacity of power plants and other installations that use renewable energy sources to produce electricity. For most countries and technologies, the figures reflect capacity installed and connected by the end of the calendar year. The total includes reported capacity from solar energy, wind energy, renewable hydropower, bioenergy, geothermal energy and marine energy. Pure pumped-storage hydropower is not included in the renewable total. The ranking includes the 50 sovereign countries with the largest reported values. The European Union, regional totals, territories and separately reported non-sovereign areas are excluded. Installed capacity is not the same as electricity generation. A country with more capacity does not necessarily produce the same proportion of renewable electricity every year because generation also depends on operating hours, weather, water availability, curtailment and the mix of technologies. This ranking does not measure the share of renewables in a country’s electricity system, emissions, environmental performance, energy reliability, investment, electricity exports or the cleanliness of the national grid.
