Raga Kaapi belongs to both Hindustani and Carnatic music, and here it is traced by an instrument from each tradition at once. Jayanthi Kumaresh's veena and Anil Srinivasan's piano — Srinivasan a co-founder of The Peninsula Studios, credited with bringing the piano into Carnatic performance — build the raga together in alap, then thanam, both unscripted, both arriving at the same Thyagaraja masterpiece from two different instrumental languages.
