Cairngorm Winter Odyssey

Music is Boards of Canada - Website Flash Intro (Helios remix) A fantastic winter mountaineering excursion through the subarctic tundra of Scotland's Cairngorm National Park. March 6th 2020. 'Over the Back' is a winter mountaineering route from the book 'Scotland's Winter Mountains with one axe' by Garry Smith. It begins with an ascent of Aladdin's Couloir at Coire an t-Sneachda in the Northern Cairngorms. Next is a trek across the Cairngorm Plateau to the top of Diagonal Gully. Descend here into the Loch Avon basin. From the base of the gully, a trek past Loch Avon towards Shelterstone Crag brings you to the access slopes of the hidden fortress of Castlegates Gully. Ascend here then trek back across the Cairngorm Plateau to finish the route.
