Before dawn on Sunday, October 11, a landslide-dammed tributary burst above Nepal's Budhi Gandaki river in Gorkha district, sending a surge of mud and debris down the valley that swept away an estimated 35 to 40 houses, six bridges and the construction camp of a 341-megawatt hydropower project. At Arughat, the river gauge climbed from 2.28 to 8.43 meters in under five hours, more than three meters above its danger level, with almost no rain at the site. It is Nepal's second mountain disaster in six weeks.
Five people are confirmed missing, the river was still rising and falling hours later, and geologists have been sent upstream to find out whether the blockage that caused it is really gone. What they find decides whether the warnings from Gorkha to Chitwan come down.
