Empowering the Next Generation of Women | Alka Bhargav, AUM Foundation on the RCM Podcast

What happens when one person decides she can make a difference? In this episode of the Rocket City Momentum Podcast, Dana Stone sits down with Alka Bhargav, founder of AUM Foundation, to talk about a mission that has now impacted more than 350 young women in the Huntsville area. AUM Foundation works with high-potential, under-resourced high school girls to help them break cycles of generational poverty and reach their educational and career goals. Through mentorship, ACT preparation, career exploration, scholarships, life-skills education and other resources, the organization is helping young women build confidence, resilience and a path toward their futures. Alka shares how an idea she originally imagined might help just 10 girls a year has grown into something much bigger. She also shares the stories that have shaped the organization, why mentorship is about becoming a trusted guide rather than another authority figure, and why she believes “you don’t need permission to be empowered.” The conversation also looks ahead to AUM Foundation’s next major vision: a new campus in North Huntsville designed to address some of the biggest barriers young women face while pursuing higher education, including housing instability, mental health challenges and a lack of a strong support network. The planned campus will ultimately include affordable housing for approximately 100 young women along with a Success Center providing wraparound services. And, of course, they talk about one of Huntsville’s most colorful annual events: Bollywood Night, AUM Foundation’s signature fundraiser. Alka explains why she brought a piece of her Indian culture into the event, why everyone is encouraged to dress up and participate, and how an evening filled with dancing, color and celebration ultimately helps support the foundation’s mission.
