Before millions of eyes look up at Maa Durga… There is Kumartuli. ❤️ Every year, as August arrives, something magical begins in the narrow lanes of North Kolkata. The preparations for Durga Puja slowly come alive. What looks like simple mud in the hands of an ordinary person becomes something extraordinary in the hands of a Kumartuli artisan. This is where the journey of Maa Durga begins. With nothing more than clay, straw, bamboo, hands, patience and years of experience, these artists create the divine form of Maa Durga. Layer by layer, the structure takes shape. The hands work quietly, but the art speaks loudly. For me, Kumartuli is not just a place where idols are made. It is where Kolkata’s Durga Puja begins. In this 3-minute film, I wanted to capture the early stage of Maa Durga making in Kumartuli — when the idol is still far from its final form, when the colours haven’t arrived yet, when the eyes haven’t been painted, and when the goddess is still hidden inside earth and imagination. The most beautiful part is that these artists don’t simply make idols. They bring emotion to clay. They know how a face should look. How Maa’s eyes should feel. How the hands should be shaped. How every curve and expression should carry the spirit of the goddess. And perhaps that’s the magic of Kumartuli. Mud becomes art. Art becomes Maa. And Maa becomes an emotion for millions. Every Durga Puja that we celebrate with lights, music, food and festivities has a quiet beginning here — inside these workshops, among piles of clay, bamboo frames and the hardworking hands of Kolkata’s real artists.
