The Breakers, Cornelius Vanderbilt II's Newport "cottage," cost roughly $250 million in today's dollars. In 1972 it sold for about $2.8 million. What did the most famous Gilded Age mansion really cost, and who paid the installments? In 1892 the wooden Breakers burned to the ground, months after Cornelius Vanderbilt II lost his eldest son. He hired Richard Morris Hunt, the architect who had just finished Alva Vanderbilt's Marble House, to build a 70-room Italian Renaissance palazzo on Ochre Point that could not burn: a steel frame, Indiana limestone, boilers set away from the house, rooms built in Paris by Jules Allard and Sons, and bathtubs that ran hot and cold salt water. Society gossip said it was meant to make Marble House look modest. By the time it opened in 1895, Alva had already divorced William K. Vanderbilt. Mr. Hollis, our fictional English butler, audits the whole bill. We weigh the disputed $7 million to $12 million construction figures, count how many years of wages a housemaid would have needed to pay for the house, and follow the installments: Cornelius's stroke after the quarrel over Neily's marriage, a will that disinherited a son, Alfred Vanderbilt's death on the Lusitania, Alice Vanderbilt's 35 years as a widow, and Countess Gladys Széchenyi leasing the house to the Preservation Society of Newport County for $1 a year. This is a story of old money, generational wealth and inheritance, told from below stairs, with sources cited and every dollar figure converted by a fixed method.
