Walk in Xi'an Happiness Forest Belt, the largest urban landscape forest belt in China｜西安“幸福林带”之“森之谷“

The Xi'an Happiness Forest Belt is one of the largest underground complexes in the world and the largest urban landscape forest belt in China, which is called the "urban oasis along the Silk Road". It started the construction in 2016. It was grandly opened on July 1st, 2021. It includes three Districts: Energy Valley (A District), Forest Valley (B District), Happy Valley (C District). Right now only the Forest Valley is fully finished. The Xi'an Happiness Forest Belt is located between Xingfu(Happiness) Road and Wanshou Road, east of Xi'an, with a length of about 5.85 kilometers from north(Huaqing Road) to south(Xinxing Road) and an average width of 210 meters. It includes five major projects including green landscapes, an underground space, municipal roads, utility tunnels and subways. The total investment is over 24 billion yuan. It integrates municipal roads with urban subway rail transit, underground parking lots and surrounding bus stations, and it will greatly improve the traffic capacity and traffic efficiency in the east of Xi'an. The whole forest belt was planted by more than 40,000 trees, and the green coverage rate is as high as 85%. It is an ecological and natural oxygen belt for improving the environment in the east of Xi'an. With sponge city design concept, the Xi'an Happiness Forest Belt can absorb, store, seep and purify water when it rains. When water is needed, the stored water will be "released" and utilized to help enhance urban ecosystem and reduce the occurrence of urban floods. It makes full use of underground space resources, with a development area of 800,000 square meters. There are 23 sinking plazas and 34 “raindrops” in it. The sinking plazas and “raindrops” introduce sunlight, air and green into the depressed and cramped underground space, which enhance its natural ventilation.
