In a 5-year saga over the character of Kingston’s historic downtown, some have created an artificial argument that pits maintaining a historic area against desired intensification. In fact, the FHF has shown the two outcomes can coexist beautifully. Heritage Week is the perfect time to reinforce this message.
**Minutes 2:57 to 3:45 of this video have been amended at the request of Homestead Land Holdings Ltd. Here are the words that were deleted:
'Mr. Baird was retained by the Frontenac Heritage Foundation to prepare an alternative design to be part of a negotiation with Homestead. The question was is there a better way to do this for Kingston?
Baird: To look at the program for the Homestead developments and to see how far you could get in accommodating their program without violating the height limit in the north block area of 25.5 meters, nine storeys, as long as you employ a modest floor-to-floor height. It was agreed that there would be a consultation between Homestead and the Foundation prior to the re-hearing being set up.
Donnelly: Sadly, the response by Homestead was to reject this alternative design out of hand - there was no meeting - there was no conference call.' **
