Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow takes place after Captain America: Civil War, with Natasha on the run after violating the Sokovia Accords. While attempting to disappear, she receives a mysterious package from Yelena Belova, the woman who grew up alongside her as part of an undercover Russian family. Natasha soon discovers that the Red Room, the organization that trained and controlled her, is still operating under General Dreykov. Together, Natasha and Yelena reunite with Alexei Shostakov, also known as the Red Guardian, and Melina Vostokoff as they attempt to locate the Red Room and free the Widows still trapped under Dreykov’s control. Beneath the espionage, action, and Marvel spectacle is a story about trauma, manipulation, guilt, sisterhood, and whether a family created for a mission can eventually become something real. Scarlett Johansson brings a more vulnerable side to Natasha, while Florence Pugh immediately makes Yelena one of the most memorable characters in the movie. David Harbour brings plenty of chaos as Alexei, and Rachel Weisz adds another complicated layer to Natasha and Yelena’s fractured family dynamic. Between Natasha and Yelena’s reunion, the prison escape, Red Guardian’s stories, the dinner scene, Taskmaster’s identity, the truth about Dreykov’s daughter, and the destruction of the Red Room, Black Widow (2021) delivers some really compelling and emotional sequences whilst simultaneously falling short at times in the visual department.
