Wartime veterans who have turned 65 can qualify for a tax-free VA pension with no disability at all. For a single veteran, the VA fills the gap up to $17,441 a year, and up to $29,093 if you need help at home. Nothing is automatic, so if you do nothing, you get nothing. The catch that knocks out the most people involves your savings, and the biggest payment is the one most veterans never hear about.
What we cover:
Two different VA checks - disability pay versus a needs-based pension that does not care how you got hurt
Who is on it - about 123,000 veterans in the VA's last yearly count, and you have to apply
Point #1: How the check is figured - the gap between your income and $17,441 (single) or $22,839 (with a spouse)
Social Security counts - $14,000 a year leaves a $3,441 gap, about $287 a month; at $18,000 the basic pension pays $0
The 2027 raise - about 3.6% from December 1, announced October 14, new table not yet posted
Point #2: Who qualifies - 90 days with one wartime day before September 8, 1980, or 24 months after September 7, 1980
Wartime, not war - Vietnam period August 1964 to May 1975, Gulf War from August 1990 with no end date
Reggie's story: a base in Georgia, no rating, and a check of about $3,441 a year he could have started seven years earlier
Point #3: The catch - net worth line of $163,699, with your house and car left out
The 3-year look-back - up to 5 years with no pension, $2,874 of gifted money per month of penalty, and the window to undo it
Point #4: Medical costs - out-of-pocket bills above the $1,141 floor (married) come off your income; Curtis and Doris's gap of about $4,700 a year
Your list for this week - intent to file (VA Form 21-0966), gather papers, then VA Form 21P-527EZ
Point #5: Aid and attendance - the line jumps to $29,093 single or $34,488 with a spouse; VA Form 21-2680
Henry's story: an aide costing $14,400 a year and a pension of about $23,700 - plus the averages, $9,400 basic versus $22,000 aid and attendance

The VA benefits line is 800-827-1000. An accredited VSO at your county veterans office, the DAV, the VFW or the American Legion will help you file for free - nobody should ever take a piece of your pension, and never give away savings to get under the net worth line without talking to a service officer first.
