Just 24 kilometres from Mysuru, on the sacred banks of the Kapila and Kaundinya rivers, stands the historic city of Nanjangud. Known as one of Karnataka’s important pilgrimage centres, Nanjangud is not only a land of temples and devotion. Its streets, monasteries and sacred rivers carry centuries of spiritual, cultural and Vedic traditions. But hidden within this ancient city is another fascinating story — the story of Sri Raghavendra Swamy and his unique Pratika Sannidhana in Nanjangud. How did Rayaru’s presence come to Nanjangud? Why is Rayaru worshipped here through a unique symbolic Pratima Sannidhana rather than only through a traditional Brindavana? What is the connection between Sri Sujnanendra Theertha, Mantralayam and Nanjangud? And what is the story behind the mysterious Omkara heard from a stone on the banks of the Kaveri? According to tradition, these extraordinary events eventually led to the installation of the sacred symbol of Sri Raghavendra Swamy at the Nanjangud Mutt. The Mutt is also associated with the Pancha Brindavanas — the Brindavanas of five saints belonging to the Mantralaya tradition. Today, during Sri Raghavendra Swamy Aradhana Mahotsava, the Mutt comes alive with bhajans, Vedic chanting, special rituals, prayers and Annadana, drawing devotees from different places. This is not merely the story of a Mutt. It is a story of faith. A story of Guru Bhakti. A story of a divine message. A story of an Omkara heard on the banks of a sacred river.
