PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti hit out at Sheikh Abdullah, saying the mistrust between Kashmiris and the rest of the country stemmed from developments and political campaigns following 1953, which she said continued until 1975. Speaking on the occasion of Accession Day, Mufti said Kashmiris are still facing suspicion and uncertainty despite Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India in 1947. Recalling the events of 1947, Mufti said Pakistan invaded Jammu and Kashmir, following which Maharaja Hari Singh sought India's assistance and signed the Instrument of Accession. She said the acceptance of Jammu and Kashmir, a Muslim-majority region, by India demonstrated the democratic values of the country. Mufti said Sheikh Abdullah's ratification of the accession had reassured people that India was not an occupying force. She described the accession as conditional, intended to safeguard Jammu and Kashmir's unique identity and culture, and said it was not meant to undermine the state's relationship with the Union of India. #mehboobamufti #nc #News18j&k Find the Latest News, Top Headlines, and Breaking news.
