Cannae, 216 BC: The Trap That Swallowed Rome's Biggest Army | Legions Mapped
How did Hannibal surround a Roman army that outnumbered his own? At Cannae in 216 BC, Rome fielded the largest army in its history — and Carthage's greatest general swallowed it whole. This is the story of the most famous trap in ancient warfare.
Rome did not lose at Cannae only because Hannibal's center bent. Rome lost because its cavalry left the field first. Once Hasdrubal's horsemen could ride behind the legions, the deep Roman center stopped being a battering ram and became a crowd with nowhere to go. One battle. One question. Answered on a map.
The numbers in this video are disputed, and we show our working: Polybius says about 70,000 Roman dead, Livy says 48,200, and many modern accounts work closer to Livy — some argue for far fewer. Where the ancient sources disagree, the video says so.
