Forgiveness | The God Who Forgives

In this opening session of our series on forgiveness, we move past surface-level definitions to explore the ultimate source: God as the Forgiver. Before we can truly understand how to forgive others, we must first understand the character of the God who reveals Himself as the anchor of all forgiveness. In this teaching, we explore: The Character of God: Drawing from Exodus 34:6–7, we look at the most quoted text in the Old Testament, where God reveals Himself as merciful and gracious, yet just. Mercy vs. Justice: Discover why mercy and justice are not competing attributes in God. While He is abounding in steadfast love, He does not treat guilt as though it never happened. The "Bath" vs. The "Feet Washing": Using the analogy from John 13:10, we distinguish between the once-and-for-all "bath" of justification (which brings us into God's family) and the ongoing "feet washing" of confession (which restores our conscious closeness with Him). The Cost of Forgiveness: Forgiveness is tied to atonement and life given, not just overlooking sin. A Pastoral Approach to Trauma: We address the reality of deep wounds from parents, friends, and the church. We discuss why "improper" teaching on forgiveness—such as forcing someone to "forgive and forget" or return to an abuser—can often cause as much damage as the original wound. Key Highlights: Dealing with Trauma: Why we must not "wallpaper over the cracks" of trauma or try to spiritualize it away. The Necessity of Honesty: Sometimes you can’t pray; you can only cry. Learn the importance of being honest before God about your pain rather than maintaining a "prayer culture" in the flesh. Boundaries and Discipline: Why boundaries are often stronger than self-will in the fight for a victorious life.
