Located near Bicester in Oxfordshire, Rousham House and Gardens is widely regarded as one of England’s most important and untouched historic sites.
Key Information About Rousham House and Gardens
The House: Built circa 1635 by Sir Robert Dormer in a Jacobean style, it was later remodelled and extended in the 1730s by renowned architect William Kent. The house features fine Jacobean panelling, 18th-century furniture, and gothic exterior details like crenellations. Remarkably, it has remained in the ownership of the same family for nearly 400 years.
The Landscape Gardens: Designed initially by Charles Bridgeman and finalized by William Kent (1737–1741), Rousham represents the birth of the English Landscape Movement. Kent transformed the space into a classical "Augustan" landscape, scattering Roman-style statues, porticos, cascades, and follies throughout the grounds to create natural, scene-like vistas.
Famous Features:
The Praeneste Arcade: A 7-arched colonnade overlooking the River Cherwell.
Venus's Vale & The Cold Bath: Serpentine water rills and formal stone pools hidden in wooded glades.
The Walled Gardens: Featuring a 17th-century circular dovecote, box-hedged parterres, and lush herbaceous borders.
Eye-Catchers & Statues: Statues like The Dying Gladiator and Lion Attacking a Horse, alongside architectural follies positioned to draw the eye across the landscape.
Unspoilt Character: Rousham is famously uncommercialized—there is no tea room, gift shop, or modern signage, leaving the 18th-century landscape almost exactly as Kent designed it.
