I have coached USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 CK, and USMLE Step 3 students for over a decade. I went to Stanford Medical School, scored top 0.1% on Step 1 and Step 2 CK, and trained in anesthesia at Harvard. The DO students I coach almost always start from the same assumption: as an osteopathic student they must settle for a less competitive specialty to guarantee a match. The NRMP data tell a very different story. Most DO students assume the specialties that match DOs at MD rates are the ones nobody wants, and that Step 2 CK and publications decide every DO match. They are not. If you are a DO student choosing between COMLEX and USMLE Step 2 CK, weighing internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, or pediatrics, and worried about fewer publications than MD applicants, the problem is not the letters after your name. It is knowing which specialties read a DO differently, and the one place where a Step 2 CK threshold suddenly appears. Ready to take your USMLE prep to the next level?
