Know Your Enemy: Spiritual Warfare Is Not Against People | Ephesians 6:12

Spiritual warfare is real—but do we actually know who we're fighting? Ephesians 6:12 tells us that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood.” The difficult person in your life may have genuinely hurt you, and people are responsible for their choices, but Scripture reveals that there is also a spiritual battle happening beyond what we can see. In this teaching, we look at what the Bible says about knowing your enemy and recognizing his schemes without becoming fearful, paranoid, or obsessed with darkness. We’ll talk about four strategies we repeatedly see in Scripture: • Deception — Satan is called the father of lies. • Accusation — Scripture describes him as the accuser. • Division — anger, offense, and bitterness can give the enemy an opportunity. • Temptation — believers are told to remain sober, vigilant, and steadfast in faith. We’ll also look at an important biblical distinction: not every struggle, negative thought, temptation, or difficult circumstance should automatically be blamed on the devil. Biblical spiritual warfare requires discernment. And ultimately, James 4:7 gives us our response: “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Submission comes first. We don't study spiritual warfare so we can become obsessed with darkness. We study it so we can recognize the enemy's schemes, refuse his lies, remain grounded in truth, and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
