The Hammered Bracelet Between Mars and Jupiter: What Babylonian Scribes Carved Into Clay 3,700 Years Ago
Seven clay tablets sit behind glass at the British Museum in London. They contain approximately one thousand lines of Akkadian cuneiform known collectively as the Enuma Elish. Mainstream scholars read them as political propaganda for the god Marduk and the Babylonian empire. That reading explains who benefits from the story. It does not explain certain mechanical details embedded in the text. A body split in two. One half becoming the earth. The other half hammered into a great band stretched across the heavens. Surviving fragments assigned fixed stations between the inner and outer cosmos. For over two centuries, planetary scientists have independently asked the same question the tablets seem to answer. Why is there a field of shattered fragments orbiting between Mars and Jupiter where mathematical law predicted a whole planet should exist?
🔬 THE SCIENCE:
In seventeen sixty six, Johann Daniel Titius proposed a mathematical formula predicting planetary distances from the Sun. The formula pointed to a missing body at two point eight astronomical units, the gap between Mars and Jupiter. When Ceres was discovered there in eighteen oh one, astronomer Heinrich Olbers proposed the disrupted planet hypothesis, arguing the fragments were remains of a shattered world. Tom Van Flandern of the United States Naval Observatory published a formal Exploded Planet Hypothesis through Cambridge University Press in two thousand seven, presenting evidence from comet orbits, meteorite chemistry, and asteroid satellite predictions he made in nineteen seventy eight that were later confirmed. Meanwhile, the Giant Impact Hypothesis, the dominant model for lunar formation, confirms that mainstream science already accepts planetary destruction as a real mechanism. A Mars sized body called Theia collided with the proto Earth four point five billion years ago, and the Moon formed from the debris. The Grand Tack model proposed by Morbidelli and Walsh in twenty eleven demonstrates that Jupiter's early migration swept through the asteroid belt region, preventing a planet from ever forming there.

📋 ABOUT THIS CONTENT:
This video is produced for educational and informational purposes. Our goal is to widen the audience's understanding of ancient Mesopotamian literature and its intersections with modern planetary science. Every script is human written and grounded in peer reviewed research, named scholars, and physically verifiable artifacts held in major museums. Visual storyboards are brainstormed and developed internally by our team. We present mainstream scholarly interpretations alongside alternative readings and clearly distinguish between established science, open questions, and speculative frameworks. We do not assert conclusions. We present evidence and let viewers evaluate it for themselves.
