Join me on an unforgettable night tour on Sal Island, Cape Verde, where we had the privilege of witnessing a loggerhead sea turtle nesting on the beach.
💬 Turn on subtitles (CC) to follow the fascinating explanations shared by our local guide throughout the experience. They provide valuable insights into the turtles' behaviour, conservation efforts, and the importance of protecting this unique natural event.
This experience was conducted by a licensed local guide following strict conservation guidelines to ensure the turtles were not disturbed. The group respected a safe viewing distance, remained quiet throughout the experience, and only infrared light was used, allowing us to observe this incredible natural event without affecting the turtle's behaviour.
Sal Island is one of the world's most important nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Every year, between June and October, thousands of female turtles return to the same beaches where they were born to lay their eggs. After carefully digging a nest in the sand, they lay around 80 to 120 eggs, cover the nest, and return to the ocean. Around 45 to 60 days later, the hatchlings emerge and instinctively make their way to the sea.
Seeing this ancient natural cycle up close was a truly humbling experience and a reminder of the importance of protecting these incredible animals and their nesting habitats.
This 4K video features real ambient sounds, no music, and no narration, allowing you to experience the peaceful atmosphere of this special moment as naturally as possible.
Thank you for watching, and if you ever visit Cape Verde during turtle season, please choose an ethical, conservation-focused tour that puts the animals' wellbeing first.
