In this episode of Lessons for My Kids, Ryan Weiss talks about inspiration and motivation while recording another outdoor walking video. He describes how these feelings naturally rise and fall throughout life, from days of high energy and alignment to periods that feel like a grind. Rather than treating that ebb and flow as a reason to give up, he argues that inspiration and motivation are worth pursuing regularly because they give people reasons to live well. Ryan traces the roots of the words themselves: inspiration as something breathed into a person, often with a sense of the divine, and motivation as that which causes movement. He shares Zig Ziglar’s idea that motivation is like bathing and should be done daily. He then walks through his own sources of inspiration, including songs, movies such as Star Wars watched with his son, books like The Compound Effect, church, cultural events, and the stories of people who have already lived the kind of life he wants. The key, he says, is to stay open to these sources and to collect them over time so they can be revisited when energy fades. A central practical lesson is to act quickly when inspiration is positive. If the feeling is delayed, it often disappears. Ryan uses journaling as an example: when the urge appears, he tries to start immediately rather than waiting. At the same time, he notes that delay can be useful when the impulse is unwise. He also encourages staying in motion by attending events, reading, and seeking out people and slower forms of content rather than relying on mindless entertainment or social media. The episode is a reminder that inspiration is available from many places, but it has to be captured, practiced, and renewed.
