Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a progressive, autoimmune disease that causes inflammation throughout the body, significantly impacting a person's ability to work, maintain independence, and enjoy a good quality of life. More than half a million Canadians live with SpA—making it more common than rheumatoid arthritis, MS, and ALS combined.
SpA is an unpredictable and often invisible disease that can affect the spine, joints, skin, eyes, and digestive system. It most often begins in young adulthood, striking people in their prime working and family-building years. Many patients face delays in diagnosis (often 7-10 years) and struggle with access to life-changing treatments—with up to 50% of patients becoming resistant to treatments within five years.
Early diagnosis and proper treatment can slow progression, reduce pain, and improve quality of life. Raising awareness is key.
