The tent had waited through three winters behind the worker’s shed, its canvas soft with age and the faint scent of rain. He had meant to mend it, take his boy camping one last time before the boy grew too tall for stories under nylon stars. But the boy had already gone, and the tent stayed folded like a secret.
The mother came at dusk, her arms empty except for the leash. The dog—old, patient, one ear permanently folded—walked beside her as if he understood the weight of the hour. She did not knock. She simply stood where the worker could see her from the kitchen window, tears already bright on her face.
He stepped outside without putting on his coat.
“I heard,” he said.
She nodded, unable to speak. The dog pressed his head against her leg.
They did not talk about the eviction notice, or the cold that would come early this year, or the way a child can vanish inside a hospital room and leave the world slightly off-balance. He only went to the shed, lifted the tent in both arms the way one lifts something sacred, and placed it in her hands.
Her tears fell onto the canvas. His fell onto the dirt between them. The dog sat down and watched the two humans cry as if it were the most natural weather in the world.
When she turned to leave, the worker called after her, voice rough:
“There’s a lantern inside. And a blanket that still smells like pine.”
She looked back once. The dog looked back too.
Then the three of them—mother, dog, stolen tent—walked into the blue evening, carrying a small, quiet piece of sky.
