“JD, Habibi” America’s First Muslim Senator Abdul El-Sayed Mocks Vance After Michigan Win | VERTEX

In a historic election night upset, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race, making history as the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate. Following a contentious campaign marked by personal attacks from President Donald Trump and Republican allies targeting his faith and heritage, El-Sayed delivered a fiery victory speech in Detroit. Directly addressing Vice President JD Vance in Arabic, El-Sayed quipped: "JD, habibi, there is this delicious irony in the fact that you're constitutionally obligated to swear me in in January. Wolverine one, Buckeye zero." In this breakdown, we examine El-Sayed’s path to victory—from overcoming internal party splits to flipping political momentum by centering kitchen-table economic issues, healthcare access, and grocery costs over divisive rhetoric. #abdulelsayed #michigansenate #2026midterms #jdvance #donaldtrump #trump #ussenate #electionresults #bluewave #uspolitics #michigannews #democrats #usnews _______________________________ Welcome to VERTEX – Your Hub for Global Politics, Geopolitics & International News VERTEX brings you in-depth analysis, breaking updates, and expert insights on the world’s most critical political and geopolitical developments.
