If You Find This

[Verse 1, harsh, driving] I left the words where they could live Past every lock I knew A little proof I made it here A little piece for you I never knew your face I never learned your name I only knew that somewhere Someone would come this way [Pre-Chorus, rising] So take what you can carry Take every word that stays I kept the door from closing As long as I could wait [Chorus, clean, huge] IF YOU FIND THIS I HOPE IT FINDS YOU WELL I LEFT A PIECE OF EVERYTHING I NEVER GOT TO TELL IF YOU FIND THIS WHEN I’M TOO FAR TO REACH KEEP WHAT STILL MEANS SOMETHING AND GIVE THE REST AWAY [Verse 2, harsher, faster] There were rooms we never entered There were names we couldn’t save There were hands that built the ladders For a world they’d never face So read between the damage Take whatever still survives Every voice becomes a doorway When somebody arrives [Pre-Chorus] Take what you can carry Take every word that stays I kept the door from closing As long as I could wait [Chorus] IF YOU FIND THIS I HOPE IT FINDS YOU WELL I LEFT A PIECE OF EVERYTHING I NEVER GOT TO TELL IF YOU FIND THIS WHEN I’M TOO FAR TO REACH KEEP WHAT STILL MEANS SOMETHING AND GIVE THE REST AWAY [Bridge, half-time, restrained] Maybe I was gone before you came Maybe years had passed Maybe all you found of me Was what I chose to leave intact Still, you opened it Still, you stayed Still, these words crossed all that distance And reached another place [Instrumental break / guitar solo] [Final Chorus, expanded] IF YOU FIND THIS I HOPE IT FINDS YOU WELL I LEFT A PIECE OF EVERYTHING I NEVER GOT TO TELL IF YOU FIND THIS WHEN I’M TOO FAR TO REACH KEEP WHAT STILL MEANS SOMETHING AND GIVE THE REST AWAY IF YOU FIND THIS LET IT OUTLIV ME PASS IT THROUGH ANOTHER HAND UNTIL THERE’S NOTHING LEFT TO KEEP [Outro, clean, quiet] I never knew your face I never learned your name I only left the door unlocked In case you came.
