I. Gurdjieff, with music by Gurdjieff and Thomas de Hartmann. The Struggle of the Magicians occupies a fascinating place in Gurdjieff’s creative legacy. Conceived as a ballet in two acts, it was intended to communicate ideas not only through words, but through music, movement, rhythm, gesture, and symbolic action. At the heart of the ballet lies the idea of an inner struggle — a confrontation between different forces acting upon the human being, and the possibility of awakening from an ordinary, mechanical state of existence. Its imagery belongs to the mysterious world that surrounds much of Gurdjieff’s early work: schools of wisdom, sacred dances, hidden knowledge, ritual, transformation, and the search for a different level of consciousness. Music played an essential role in this world. Gurdjieff’s musical ideas, developed in collaboration with composer Thomas de Hartmann, brought together echoes of Eastern melodies, sacred traditions, folk music, and Western classical language, creating a musical landscape unlike almost anything else of its period. This recording presents selected fragments of music for The Struggle of the Magicians — traces of an extraordinary theatrical vision in which sound, movement, symbolism, and spiritual ideas were conceived as parts of a single whole.
