Films from the Rotten Apple | New York's Darkest Movies

New York has always been called the Big Apple... but there was a time when it felt far more like a Rotten Apple. In this video, we're taking a journey through some of the darkest, grimiest and most unsettling films ever made about New York City. From the lonely streets of Taxi Driver to the controversial world of Cruising, the disturbing violence of Maniac, the vengeance of Ms. 45, and Lucio Fulci's infamous The New York Ripper, these are films that captured a city at one of its lowest points—and turned it into one of cinema's greatest characters. Rather than simply counting down favourites, I want to explore why these films emerged when they did, how New York's crime, decay and atmosphere shaped them, and why they remain so compelling decades later. If you love horror, cult cinema, crime thrillers and physical media, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Which New York film best captures the city's darker side? Are there any essential titles you'd add to the list?
