By the age of 25, he had risen to the rank of general, leading Khmer forces against the Cham. In 1177, the Cham invaded and conquered Cambodia's capital, executing the Khmer monarch and plunging the people into suffering. Determined to liberate his kingdom, Jayavarman VII launched a relentless campaign against the Cham. Over four years, he assembled and trained a powerful army, meticulously planning their counterattack. In 1181, he decisively struck back, commanding a naval assault on the Cham forces at Lake Tonle Sap and successfully reclaiming the capital of Angkor. At the age of 54, Jayavarman VII ascended the throne, ushering in an era of peace and unprecedented prosperity for Cambodia. His reign marked a golden age, securing his legacy as one of the kingdom's greatest rulers.
