Bollani and Rava have been collaborating for several years and this “The Third Man” reflects the deep understanding within their working relationship. In this case the recording studio - the Swiss Radio Auditorium in Lugano - played an important role by allowing them to play without headphones and to enhance the possibility of direct communication in seeking each other out and responding to each other with enchanting phrasings. The album, whose title refers to Orson Welles and the tradition of film noir, but which probably wants to pay homage to the ECM label producer Manfred Eicher, is intimate and meditative, with elegant and pure breaths of improvisation that illuminate an atmosphere overall relaxing and poetic. Bollani's contrapuntal pianism, truly versatile, reveals how he has assimilated certain moments from Jarrett, Stravinsky, Bartók, Paul Bley, Morricone and many other authors which he expertly mixes while supporting the airy textures of Rava's melodic narrative. The latter provides a refined yet complex lyrical approach to the duo's music that is wonderfully self-contained. The initial "Estate" (“Summer”) by Bruno Martino, which is now a standard, expands and investigates in depth, is prodigiously shining, slow and contemplative but at times also energetic.
