Philip Sullivan is a 43-year-old husband, father, and former CPA who has been in recovery from compulsive gambling for more than two and a half years. His gambling addiction escalated while he was prescribed high-dose Adderall, eventually consuming his personal finances and leading him to take out multiple personal loans. Ultimately, he stole from his employer and, trapped in the cycle of addiction, gambled even more desperately in an irrational attempt to win enough money to replace what he had taken.
Philip credits his faith, family, and community with carrying him through recovery, restoring his marriage, and helping him rebuild a life that had been devastated by addiction. Today, he serves as HelpLine Director for the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling, where he has personally spoken with hundreds of people struggling with gambling addiction and helped many take their first steps toward recovery.
Philip now awaits sentencing on October 16 for charges stemming from the theft, facing the possibility of being separated from his wife and two sons. His story is an unfiltered example of the extraordinary damage compulsive gambling can cause—but it is also a story of accountability, community, faith, and the possibility of restoration. Through sharing his experience, Philip hopes others struggling with gambling addiction will recognize the danger sooner, ask for help, and discover that recovery is possible.
