What happened to Romans exiled to an island? Under Tiberius, a condemned senator stood in the Senate house while men he had dined with for thirty years chose which rock in the sea he would live on.
Rome did not punish men like him with prison. It punished them with a place. We follow Marcus, an imagined senator, through his sentence, his last night, the voyage and the wait, beside the Romans who left real records: Ovid's last night in Rome and his frozen wine at Tomis, Fannia who followed her husband into exile twice, Cassius Severus who grew old on Seriphos, the island even Tiberius refused because it had no water, the philosopher who found a spring there, and the emperor's own daughter, whose every visitor was checked down to his scars.
