One blocked motorway exit, the same traffic, three traffic models. Where does the queue go? • Strict FIFO (single stream, classic CTM diverge): the exit queue holds up every lane. Lanes 2 and 3 stop in front of an empty road, and the jam spills back across the whole motorway. • Relaxed FIFO: through traffic passes, but the exit queue has no length. It piles up at the node instead of spilling back upstream. • Pipe-Stream: each lane group is its own kinematic-wave stream, a pipe. Pipes chain across nodes, so the queue stays in its lane and spills back correctly, while through traffic keeps moving. A single friction coefficient φ slows the neighbouring lanes when a pipe is full (late lane changes, rubbernecking).
