How Did Ancient Humans Survive Winter When the Fire Went Out?

What did ancient humans do when their fire went out in winter? First, they tried never to let it happen. They banked coals under ash and carried embers with them: Ötzi the Iceman had a birch-bark pot with embers wrapped in maple leaves. If the fire died, they spun wood until it glowed or struck sparks from pyrite and flint. Neanderthal hand axes carry the scratch marks, and a site in England shows people making fire 400,000 years ago. But at some Neanderthal caves, fire almost vanishes in the coldest times, and scientists still argue why.
