A young woman arrives at Baker Street early one April morning, shaking, and not from the cold. Two years ago her sister died in the night, within two weeks of her wedding day, after telling her about a low whistle she kept hearing at three in the morning. Now she is engaged herself, and last night she heard the whistle.
The whole of The Adventure of the Speckled Band by Arthur Conan Doyle, read aloud, in just under an hour. A stepfather who bends a poker with his bare hands, a bell-rope that is not attached to anything, and a ventilator that does not ventilate. In 1927 Doyle picked his twelve best Holmes stories, and this one was first on his list.
Put it on as you drift off, with your feet up, or while you get through the washing up. No facts, no myths, and a good deal less shouting than usual.
