Eleven years ago, my son demanded the keys to the brand new pickup truck I had paid for with my own retirement money. When I looked him in the eye and said no, he sneered at me and told me to pack my bags and get my own place like a grown man. I was sixty-five years old, standing in the kitchen of the house my life savings had bought for him. I packed my tools into that truck the very same night, drove through a freezing rainstorm to Montana, and never looked back. Today, at seventy-six, I stood on the wrap-around cedar porch of the four point eight five million dollar timber-frame estate I built with my own two hands in Paradise Valley, watching a luxury SUV hauling a twenty-six-foot trailer barrel up my private driveway. A massive moving van rumbled right behind it, kicking up clouds of gray dust against the Montana pines. The driver door of the SUV swung open, and my estranged son, Garrett, stepped out onto the gravel after eleven years of dead silence. He pushed his designer sunglasses up onto his forehead, swept his greedy eyes across the towering Douglas fir beams of my lodge, and turned back toward the passenger seat with a triumphant grin. I told you the old man built a goldmine, Tiffany, he called out, his voice echoing across the quiet mountain valley as if he already owned the deed to the land. Back the trailer right up to the main double doors, baby, we are finally home.
