The Last Alliance collection is, to my eyes, some of Weta's finest work. It is in no small part, of course, to the marvelous original Prologue designs and their timeless beauty. What Elrond adds to this set is both stillness and movement - his pose is so beautifully judged, not only as a standalone piece, but how it compliments and balances the overall composition. Of course, these can be arranged in any number of compositions, but to me, having Sauron face out with his back to them is the most powerful. Elrond's detail is exquisite, the richness of tones and textures throughout his armor is wonderful. The colour complexity in the paint is exceptional. The black stains from the orc blood, as well as the numerous battle damage knocks, add realism and depth. The banner, with the heraldic device of Gil-galad, is staggering...as if as a premonition of what's to come, it is pointed down and is held just above a dead elven soldier's helm. It also beautifully echoes Alan Lee's fresco at the walls of Rivendell, where the Shards of Narsil were held. This is a staggeringly beautiful piece, with so much emotional weight.
