Before the supermarket checkout aisle, before the convenience chain, there was a low glass case built at a child's eye level — and behind it, rows of jars and flat boxes where one cent was still a real transaction.
This is the story of 25 penny candies that came out of that counter: candy buttons on paper strips, Necco Wafers that traveled in soldiers' pockets, the Pixy Stix that started life as a drink mix, the Astro Pop designed by two aerospace engineers, the Marathon bar with the ruler on the wrapper, the Seven Up bar with seven different fillings in one mold, the Reggie! Bar that stopped a baseball game, and the Chicken Dinner bar that promised a family a square meal for a nickel.
Some of them are still being made by families who refused to let them go. Some of them ended on a single Tuesday afternoon in July 2018 and never came back.
