But the modern form of it has a traceable origin, and this lecture follows it: from the orientalists who applied their methods for studying the Bible to the Sunnah, to the Muslim writers who translated those arguments, and the modernist and feminist readings built on them. The lecture also addresses a common claim: that the scholars of hadith only examined the chain of narrators and never the wording of the hadith itself. Finally, it offers advice on how to speak to Muslims who have been influenced by these ideas. Many of them arrived at these views through hardship rather than bad intent, so the priority is to explain the truth to them with patience, not to attack them or declare them outside of Islam.
