What makes a great leader in a hotel, airline or tour operator, and how do organisations grow their future managers? This lesson for Learning Outcome 4 of the Organisational Behaviour and Performance unit helps you critically analyse the role of leadership, apply organisational behaviour theories to appraise leadership and management, and justify the role of Human Resources Management in developing leaders. We start with Kotter's (1990) distinction between leadership and management, then work through trait and behavioural theories, Lewin's autocratic, democratic and laissez-faire styles, Blake and Mouton's Managerial Grid, Hersey and Blanchard's situational leadership, Fiedler's contingency model, path-goal theory, transactional and transformational leadership (Burns, 1978; Bass, 1985), servant leadership (Greenleaf, 1977), authentic leadership and emotional intelligence. You will apply Maslow, Herzberg, Vroom and Adams to motivation and job satisfaction, Tuckman and Belbin to teams, and the Thomas and Kilmann modes to conflict. Cases include the P&O Ferries dismissals of 2022, Hilton's 2023 ranking as the World's Best Workplace, hospitality research on servant and ethical leadership, and an illustrative hotel general manager scenario. The final section shows how strategic HRM, recruitment and selection, training, appraisal, talent management and succession planning build leadership pipelines, using CIPD guidance. This video is for learners on the OTHM Level 6 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management preparing the Task 2 leadership presentation.
