Coumbite Sous le Ciel D’Haiti (arranged by Rafael Scarfullery) Frantz Casséus (1915–1993) was a Haitian-American guitarist and composer. Born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he spent most of his adult life in the United States where he immigrated in 1946 hoping to meet pianist Fats Waller. Though influenced by jazz and European classical music, Casséus's compositions maintained a focus on Haitian folk forms, which he incorporated into his recordings and his published compositions. Casséus was a frequent collaborator with Harry Belafonte who recorded his song "Merci Bon Dieu". Between 1953 and 1969, Casséus recorded three albums for Smithsonian Folkways. Casséus wrote music until the last years of his life, but from the 1970s tendonitis in his left hand curtailed his performance and recording career. Rafael Scarfullery is a Dominican/American classical guitarist, composer, orchestral/choral conductor, organist and therapeutic musician. He has performed in various countries, including two solo recitals at Carnegie Hall. Rafael has a BM, MM and DMA in guitar performance, a MM in orchestral conducting, and four professional certifications from the American Guild of Organists. He teaches guitar at Randolph College, is the music director and organist at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and is a therapeutic musician at the UVA Hospital and the Hospice of the Piedmont. Rafael has a Youtube Channel (scarfulleryguitar) with hundreds of his compositions and his purpose is to compose and share music to encourage compassion, healing and joy.
