What Happened to Madonna at 68 – Try Not to CRY When You See This
The tragedy of Madonna is that she spent her entire life controlling everything while the most important things always slipped from her grasp. We remember the girl in a wedding dress rolling around on the VMA stage, the Queen of Pop wearing a cone-shaped corset challenging the Vatican and the entire moral order of the nineties, the sixty-five-year-old icon standing before hundreds of thousands of people on Copacabana Beach as if time had no right to touch her. What we see when we think of Madonna is the image of absolute power, absolute control, unmoved by anything or anyone. What we almost never see is the five-year-old child standing beside a hospital bed in Bay City, Michigan, watching her mother slowly die of breast cancer without understanding why the woman she loved most in the world could no longer get up, the enraged little girl watching her father marry the very housekeeper only two years after her mother's funeral while no one asked whether the child's heart was still intact, the nineteen-year-old girl stepping off a bus in New York with thirty-five dollars in her pocket and not a single phone number to call when night fell, the sixty-five-year-old woman lying unconscious in intensive care with a breathing tube down her throat while sepsis silently shut down organ after organ inside her body. The woman who built an entire empire on the will to control everything would have to stand and watch her fifteen-year-old son refuse to come home, fly to London to live with his father, and no court in the world could give back what she wanted most.
