You're prepared. You know the scene. And then suddenly you're not acting anymore — you're performing, monitoring yourself, trying to demonstrate the right thing at the right moment. What actually happens in the body when that takes over, and how do you get out of it? In this episode, I sit down with Madeleine Hutchins — an actor and acting teacher whose career has taken her from the West End and national tours to New York and international theatre, and who has coached actors for years, including her work with Anthony Meindl's Actor Workshop. Madeleine's teaching incorporates risk, vulnerability, play, embodiment, breath, voice, and connection to the actor's instrument. We get into what she actually sees and does when an actor gets stuck in self-consciousness — and why her answer is almost never a note about the line, and almost always something physical. Topics include: Madeleine's earliest memory of being acknowledged for acting, and her path to drama school in London Working with legendary director Sir Peter Hall, and the quiet, one-on-one way he gave notes Understudying a West End lead, and what it feels like to step into "I am here and I'm doing this" What she watches for the moment an actor gets stuck or self-conscious — and why the fix is usually a body adjustment, not a verbal one "No acting acting" — what she saw the first time she watched an Anthony Meindl class Risk, control, and the difference between living a scene and watching yourself live it Somatic awareness, breath, and why the body always leads with more truth than the head Preparation without planning — auto-cue, cold reading, and trusting what arrives in the moment A closing practice: legs up the wall, a full-body scan for regulation and presence Find Madeleine here: Instagram: @madelinehutchins Substack: The Felt Life The Actor's Nervous System explores the intersection of acting, embodiment, psychology, neuroscience, and the creative process.
