You know the photograph. A New York street at night, September 1954.
A subway grate, a white dress lifting, a crowd of two thousand
people, and a blonde woman laughing into a camera. America decided
that was the happiest night of her life. It was not. Her husband was
standing in that crowd watching, and by every account of the people
who were there, his face had gone. The marriage was over in nine
months. He was the one who filed nothing and said nothing, and she
was the one who stood in a courtroom and used the words mental
cruelty. And then he spent the next twenty years doing something
almost nobody knew about until after he was dead.
Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe were married for nine months and
thirteen days in 1954. He wanted a wife. She was becoming the most
famous woman on earth while he watched. She filed nineteen days
after the night on the subway grate, testified about his coldness
under oath, and he did not contest a word of it.
This is the story of what he did for the next thirty-seven years.
The night he broke down the wrong door. The locked psychiatric ward
in 1961 and the phone call that got her out, six years after the
divorce. The thirty people he personally allowed into her funeral,
and the ones he refused. And the standing order at a flower shop
that ran for two decades.
Sourced from court records, contemporary press coverage, and the
accounts of the people who were in the room. Sources named on screen.
