Planning a studio? Don't start with the gear list. Start with these five questions, the same brief I use before every studio build. 0:00 Why gear comes last 0:16 1. The program: what are you making? 0:54 2. The delivery: where does it go? 1:32 3. The people: who operates it? 2:11 4. The recovery: what happens when something fails? 2:32 5. The cost: what does it take to keep running? 2:54 Put it in a one-page operating brief Key takeaways Write down your typical show first: people, sources, remote guests and turnaround time. Map the whole signal path from cameras to audience, including return paths, monitoring and crew comms. Staff for an ordinary production day and walk through the busiest moment. Pick a realistic failure, decide what the audience sees and hears, and rehearse it. Budget for acoustics, lighting, training, support and replacements, not just equipment. Put it all in a one-page operating brief and give every vendor the same brief. Episode notes + full transcript: https://luckymcnulty.com/episodes/bef...
