Five straight days of heavy rainfall have caused widespread flooding, coastal road collapses, and agricultural destruction across the island of Crete, Greece. The storm, which scientists rank among the most extreme to strike the island in decades, brought over 31 inches of rain to parts of the region, leading to two confirmed deaths across Greece. High rainfall totals triggered major river overflows and ground collapses, severing transportation routes near Ierapetra and inundating nearly four square miles of farmland on the Lasithi Plateau. In the western mountains, eight park staff and forest rangers remain stranded inside the Samaria Gorge, where fast-moving floodwaters have buried the trail out. In this video, we examine the five-day deluge, the coastal and mountain damage, the stranded workers inside Samaria Gorge, and the government relief response underway as engineers assess the destruction.
