How do you develop a fast, effortless Sautillé without forcing the bow to bounce?
In Part 5 of my Violin Bow Strokes series, we'll explore how the natural elasticity of the bow creates Sautillé and how to develop the speed, flexibility, and control needed for this rapid bouncing stroke.
Unlike Spiccato, Sautillé begins with a small, fast movement on the string. As we find the right speed and bow placement, the bow begins to rebound naturally.
In this lesson, you'll learn:
The difference between Spiccato and Sautillé
How to develop Sautillé from a rapid tremolo
How the wrist, fingers, and forearm work together
How to find your bow's natural bouncing point
How bow placement affects the speed of the rebound
How index-finger engagement and bow tilt influence the character of the stroke
How to develop a consistent Sautillé using a G-major scale
How to practise Kreutzer Étude No. 8, progressing from 8 to 4, 2, and finally 1 stroke per note
How to maintain the natural bounce during string crossings
How to use the double-stop level to make string crossings smoother and more economical
The most important principle of Sautillé is:
Don't force the bounce. Let the bow's elasticity do the work.
As the movement becomes smaller and more efficient, you'll discover how to produce a clear, rapid articulation with less effort.
