The Nene Valley Railway hosted recently overhauled GWR King 4-6-0 No 6024 King Edward I where it hauled its first Passenger trains since overhaul was completed early this year. Not only do we visit the Railway to travel behind The King but also take a look around Wansford as well. 0:00 We begin our day at Peterborough Nene Valley Station. Opened in 1986, it serves as the western terminus of the line as well as providing access to Railworld. In the bay platform is BR Class 43 HST No 43045 The Grammar School Doncaster AD1350. 0:20 GWR King 4-6-0 No 6024 King Edward I arrives with a service from Wansford. This was the engine's first passenger train since its overhaul was completed earlier this year. 1:49 GWR King 4-6-0 No 6024 King Edward I was built at Swindon in 1930 and was withdrawn from service in 1962. After being used in a bridge test alongside 6023 King Edward II, she was sent to Barry Scrapyard where she lanquished until 1974 when she was rescued. After restoration was completed in 1989, she has most of her preserved life on Main Line Duties. 2:04 King Edward I runs round its train at Peterborough. Here, you can get a sense of the size of these engines. Due to this and their weight, they only ran as far as Plymouth and Wolverhampton. King Edward I would end up becoming the first of her class to venture into Cornwall in 1998. 4:36 We depart Peterborough and head through the Cambridgeshire Countryside towards Wansford. The Nene Valley Railway is 7 and a half miles long. 7:44 Whilst waiting for the train to depart Wansford, we get a look at the unusual front bogie. It should be noted that the engine has been fitted with a cut down Chimney, Safety Valve Cover and Cab. This shot was achived because of a path that crosses the River Nene alongside the Railway. 10:21 Whilst we wait for the train back to Peterborough, we look around Wansford Station. On display is SJ B 4-6-0 No 101 which is from Sweden (The Nene Valley owns serveral European Engines and rolling stock). In the workshop under overhaul is 0-6-0T No Derek Crouch and BR 5MT 4-6-0 No 73050 City Of Peterborough and on shed is Danish State Railway 0-6-0T No 656 Tinkerbelle. 10:46 In steam at Wansford is 2-2-0WT 9449 The Blue Circle. Built in 1926, she spent her working life at a Cement Works before being preserved. After spending most of her preserved life at various locations, she was sold to a fitter at The Nene Valley Railway. Also, we should note that this engine was the basis for Thomas The Tank Engine character Fergus. 11:57 GWR King 4-6-0 No 6024 King Edward I arrives into Wansford with a service from Peterborough. The engine has been finished in GWR Lined Green with Great Western on the tender. The engine however has kept its double chimney which was fitted in BR Days. 13:23 The line runs to Yarwell Junction which is just a single platform with a run round loop. King Edward I runs round its train for the trip back to Peterborough. 14:06 We end our trip to The Nene Valley Railway with GWR King 4-6-0 No 6024 King Edward I departing Peterborough Nene Valley with a service for Wansford. The King's first railtour duty of this boiler ticket is a run from Crewe to Carlisle and return over the S&C in November.
