I wrote this song after watching an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender that featured a face-stealing creature named “Koh.” I thought about a situation in which someone sacrificed their own face for another out of love. The loss of a face is the loss of identity. To make oneself a blank slate for another is profound and beautiful and heartbreaking. This song is all of that.
