Rounding the bend of the pass, I saw thin peat smoke rising from the stone roofs of a village in the glen. I untied my pack at the alehouse on the square, warmed my hands with the villagers at the smith's still-glowing forge, and spent the evening by the hearth to the hum of a spinning wheel. The small cairn I saw from the window, high on the pass, marks the road I'll take in the morning. May this keep you company before sleep, or through a quiet hour of reading.

📝 About each track
1. Smoke Rising Along the Glen — Rounding the bend of the pass, I saw stone-roofed houses huddled in the glen, thin threads of peat smoke rising from them, and high on the mountainside the scattered windows of a miners' hamlet I have never visited.
2. An Iron Sign Over the Square — I crossed the stone bridge into the square and untied my pack beneath the alehouse eaves, where an iron sign creaked gently on its hook and the stream below threw up white spray.
3. The Smith's Forge Still Glowing — The forge still glowed after the day's work, and villagers drifted in to warm their hands; the smith let me hold a horseshoe fresh from the quenching tub, heavier than I expected.
4. A Cairn on the High Pass — Pushing open the upstairs window of the alehouse, I saw a small cairn of travellers' stones on the crest of the high pass; tomorrow I will add a stone of my own and walk down into the country beyond.
5. A Spinning Wheel in the Corner — In the corner by the hearth the landlady's spinning wheel turned quietly, a fine thread lengthening from her fingertips, while smoked sausages hanging from the beams gave off a faint scent.
6. Old Steps Cut Into the Crag — When the voices in the square had died away, the old steps cut into the crag behind the village showed faintly in the moonlight; no one in the village could tell me where they lead.
7. Embers Banked Till Morning — Deep in the night the landlady crumbled the last peat into the hearth and banked the embers under ash to keep them till morning; beneath the ash only a red warmth breathes slowly.
8. A Box Bed by the Warm Chimney — I climbed into the box bed built against the chimney wall and drew its wooden door half closed; the hearth's warmth still in the stones reached my back, and the cairn on the pass and the miners' lights faded away beyond sleep.
